ADHD & neurodivergent academic coaching built around how your brain actually works

If school feels like a daily fight with your own brain, you aren’t lazy and you aren’t alone.

John McAvoy, PhD, ADHD coach

Who you would be working with

John McAvoy, PhD

John has ADHD, and he built this coaching from the inside. He also holds a PhD and has taught at university from the undergraduate through the doctoral level. He coaches from that lived experience and more than 15 years supporting students at every level as a university administrator and faculty member, and he is working toward a neurodivergent-coaching certification. This is academic coaching, not therapy or a clinical service.

What ADHD coaching includes

What we do

  • Build systems for starting, time, and working memory
  • Body-doubling and accountability that make starting easier
  • Plan your week around your energy and focus
  • Help with accommodations and self-advocacy

What we never do

  • Write your essays
  • Sit your exams
  • Do your coursework

What changes

What gets easier when the system fits your brain

From your first session

A short “how I work best” profile and strategies you can use this week.

As you go

One place for every deadline, and ways to start tasks that don’t depend on willpower.

On the hard weeks

A system built for good days and bad days, so one rough week doesn’t undo the rest.

Every brain is different, and progress isn’t a straight line. On your free consultation we map what an easier term could look like for you.

The problem

The parts of school that quietly drain you

Neurodivergent brains are often strong exactly where it counts: ideas, energy, pattern-spotting, and hyperfocus on the right problem. The friction usually shows up in the machinery around the work, and that machinery is coachable.

ADHD coaching and body-doubling: two students working side by side on laptops

Starting is the hardest part

You know what to do. Getting your brain to begin it is a different problem, and willpower isn’t the fix.

Time doesn’t behave

A deadline feels far away until it’s suddenly here. Estimating how long things take is genuinely harder for you, and that isn’t a character flaw.

Too many tabs open at once

Holding steps, details, and next actions in your head at the same time is exhausting, and things slip no matter how much you care.

Asking for what you need is its own hurdle

Accommodations exist, but the process is confusing, and it can feel easier to just struggle quietly. It shouldn’t be.

ADHD Coaching FAQs

The coaching

What does an ADHD coach actually do?

For college and university students, ADHD coaching builds the systems that make school workable with the brain you have, especially the executive function skills ADHD makes harder: getting started on tasks, managing time, holding details in working memory, and speaking up for what you need. It’s practical work, ideally in weekly sessions, with async support in between so one missed day doesn’t turn into a missed week. You bring the goals and the coursework; the coach helps you build the structure around them.

Is ADHD coaching therapy?

No. Coaching is practical and forward-looking, built on systems and accountability. It works alongside therapy and medication, and it never replaces them. If you need clinical support, we’ll say so and help you find it.

I’ve tried planners and apps and nothing sticks. Why would this be different?

Because a tool only works if it fits your brain and someone helps you actually use it. We build the system with you and adjust it until it holds. The accountability is the part most tools are missing.

What is body-doubling?

Working alongside someone else, in person or on a call, so that starting and staying on task is easier. It sounds simple. For a lot of ADHD brains it’s the single most useful thing, and it’s the heart of our Brains Like Ours group.

Can you help me get accommodations?

Yes. We help you understand what you can ask for, prepare what you need, and practice the conversation. You lead it, and we make it less daunting.

Will you do my work for me?

No. We coach, build systems, and give feedback on the work you write yourself. We never write essays, sit exams, or do coursework. Your degree stays yours.

How does coaching work week to week?

Sessions are one-to-one on Microsoft Teams, in your browser. Monday to Friday, email or WhatsApp us between sessions and you’ll hear back within one business day. On Saturdays and Sundays, when a lot of coursework actually gets done, send a quick question on WhatsApp and we’ll usually reply the same day: a short answer to get you unstuck, not a full review. Longer feedback and sessions happen on weekdays. Need to move a session? Give us 24 hours' notice and we’ll rebook it. Later cancellations and no-shows count as used, and unused sessions can be rebooked within 30 days.

Fit and cost

Do I need an ADHD diagnosis for ADHD coaching?

No. Self-identification is welcome. If these challenges sound like you, that’s enough to start. We aren’t a diagnostic service, and we’ll never ask you to prove anything.

Do you work with autistic students, or only ADHD?

We work with a range of neurodivergent students. John coaches from ADHD lived experience and from shared, affirming values, and he doesn’t diagnose or claim expertise he doesn’t have. If you aren’t sure we’re the right fit, the free consultation is the place to find out.

What if my energy and focus are unpredictable?

That’s expected, and the plan is built for it. We design for good days and hard days, so a rough week doesn’t undo your progress or your system.

I study part time or carry a reduced course load. Is ADHD coaching still a good fit?

Yes. A lighter course load often sits next to a job or a family, sometimes both, and each one adds dates and tasks for an ADHD brain to keep track of. We build one system for the whole week, so school and everything around it live in the same place. If a reduced course load is an accommodation you want to ask for, we can help you prepare for that conversation too.

Do you work with students outside the U.S.?

Yes. Everything is online, across time zones. ECS is based in The Hague and works with students in the U.S., the Netherlands, and beyond.

How much does ADHD coaching cost?

Options run from a single Fit + Focus Session to a full-term package; see the options above. The starter session’s fee counts in full toward a package if you continue. You get pricing in writing before anything begins. Monthly plans are paid at the start of each month and run month to month. We recommend three months, because study skills take time to stick, but you can stop any time before your next month begins. Term packages are paid in two parts, half at the start and half at the midpoint. If none of them fit, we can build a custom ADHD coaching plan around how you work and what you’re studying. No VAT added, subject to change.
