Adult learner coaching that fits school around the life you already have
You aren’t too old for this, and you aren’t behind. You’re doing something hard, on purpose, and you can do it well.
Going back to school as an adult is its own kind of hard: fitting study around work, family, and a full life, often after years away from a classroom. Coaching gives you the confidence and the systems to actually finish, with a plan that fits the life you already have.
Coached by John McAvoy, PhD, who went back to school as an adult with a family.

Who you would be working with
John McAvoy, PhD
John went back to school as an adult and earned a PhD while raising a family, so he is not guessing about what this takes. His doctorate is in how adults actually learn, and his own research looked at balancing family and study during that time. He is MBTI Certified and has spent more than 15 years supporting students at every level as a university administrator and faculty member. This is academic coaching, not tutoring and not therapy.

The problem
What actually makes going back hard
Time and money are real barriers to going back. But for a lot of adults, the hardest one is quieter: the doubt about whether you still belong in a classroom. That doubt is common, and it’s beatable with the right plan and the right support.

The confidence gap
You wonder if you still have it in you, or if everyone else will be younger and quicker. That doubt is the biggest hurdle, and it fades fast once you get moving.
No room in the day
Between a job, a family, and everything else, study time is whatever is left over, which is usually nothing. It has to be built in, not hoped for.
School changed while you were away
Online portals, discussion boards, submitting work through a system you have never seen. The tech can feel like a wall before you even reach the coursework.
Rusty study muscles
Reading dense material, writing papers, sitting exams. If it has been years, those skills feel rusty, and that’s completely normal.

Adult Learner Coaching FAQs
The coaching
I haven’t studied in years. Can I really do this?
Yes. Returning to school after years away is common, and study skills come back faster than you think, especially with a plan and someone in your corner. We rebuild them step by step, starting with small wins that prove you can.
I’m a part-time student with a full-time job and a family. How do I fit school in?
That’s the core of the coaching. Many adult students study part time for exactly this reason, and part-time study works best with a plan that holds across the whole program. We build study time into your actual week, protect it, and keep the plan realistic so it survives a busy stretch instead of collapsing at the first hard week.
I’m worried about the technology and online classes.
Very common, and very fixable. We walk you through the portals, the submission systems, and the tools until they feel normal, so the tech stops being a barrier and becomes just another part of the routine.
Will you do my coursework for me?
No. We coach you and build your skills and confidence. We never write your papers, take your exams, or do your work. If we edit, it’s your own words and you approve every change.
Is adult learner coaching therapy or life coaching?
No. Adult learner coaching is academic coaching for adult students: practical, focused on school, and built around your goals as a student. It isn’t therapy, though it does take the confidence side seriously, because for adults that’s often where the real barrier is.
What if I can only study in the evenings or on weekends?
That works. Everything is online and scheduled around you, including evenings and weekends. We build the plan around the time you actually have, not an ideal week that never happens.
How does coaching work week to week?
Sessions are one-to-one on Microsoft Teams, in your browser. Monday to Friday, email or WhatsApp us between sessions and you’ll hear back within one business day. On Saturdays and Sundays, when a lot of coursework actually gets done, send a quick question on WhatsApp and we’ll usually reply the same day: a short answer to get you unstuck, not a full review. Longer feedback and sessions happen on weekdays. Need to move a session? Give us 24 hours' notice and we’ll rebook it. Later cancellations and no-shows count as used, and unused sessions can be rebooked within 30 days.
Fit and cost
Am I too old to go back to school?
No. Going back to school at 40, 50 or later is common, and adults of every age do well, and colleges are full of returning students. Your experience works in your favor. The only real question is whether you have the support to fit school into your life, and that’s exactly what coaching provides.
I’m a non-traditional student. Is this coaching for me?
Yes. Non-traditional student usually means your path into college looks different: you started later, you study part time, you work full time, or you’re raising a family while you study. That’s exactly who adult learner coaching is built for. John went back to school as an adult with a family and finished a PhD, so we start from the week you actually have, evenings and weekends included, and build your study time and your confidence around it.
Do you work with people going back for a first degree, or also graduate school?
Both. Whether you’re finishing an undergraduate degree you started years ago or beginning a master’s later in life, the coaching adapts. If you’re heading into a thesis or dissertation, we have a dedicated track for that.
Do you work with students outside the U.S.?
Yes. Everything is online, across time zones. ECS is based in The Hague and works with students in the U.S., the Netherlands, and beyond.
How much does adult learner coaching cost?
Options run from a single Confidence + Plan Session to a full-term package; see the options above. The starter session’s fee counts in full toward a package if you continue. You get pricing in writing before anything begins. Monthly plans are paid at the start of each month and run month to month. We recommend three months, because study skills take time to stick, but you can stop any time before your next month begins. Term packages are paid in two parts, half at the start and half at the midpoint. If none of them fit, we can build a custom adult learner coaching plan around your program and the life you’re working around. No VAT added, subject to change.
