DAFT visa support from Americans who’ve done it

Forums and Facebook groups are a good place to start when you’re planning a move to the Netherlands, and they often disagree. We went down that rabbit hole ourselves. We’ll be your point person for every question, so you’re not piecing answers together from forums, and we’ll help you build a business that earns from day one and holds up at renewal.

Why DAFT feels harder than it should

On your own, or with us as your partners

On your own

Every question sends you to a forum, and two threads rarely agree.

With us

You ask one person who’s done it, and get a straight answer within one business day.

On your own

You piece together which form, which documents and which office, in a new language, and hope nothing’s missing.

With us

You know the right form, what to attach and where to go before you start.

On your own

The 6-month clock starts with the decision letter, and city hall, the KvK and the bank each wait on the one before.

With us

We map the order and tell you how to book each appointment, so the clock never catches you out.

On your own

The business plan is a blank page, and you’re not sure the idea will earn a living here.

With us

A Market Check first, then a plan built on it, so you know before you move.

On your own

The permit arrives, and you’re a new business nobody can find.

With us

A website from week one and a plan for your first clients, so you’re earning from day one.

The honest version

Yes, you can do DAFT yourself

Plenty of people apply on their own. Here’s the order the IND sets out for a first-time treaty application.

1

Apply to the IND

The fee is €423, and the IND has 90 days to decide.

2

Register your business

Sign up with the Chamber of Commerce (KvK). First-time applicants have 6 months from the date on the IND’s decision letter.

3

Open a business account

Make an initial investment of at least €4.500 for most business forms, within the same 6 months. It’s your equity in the business and shows on your opening balance, and you must maintain at least €4.500 of equity in the business at all times.

4

Get it checked

An accountant or financial advisor checks your opening balance and bank statement.

What about a business plan?

It isn’t usually part of a first application, but the IND can ask for it at any time, and it looks closer at renewal, when it checks that your business has been active. So have one ready, and make it one you’ll actually run: that’s the plan we build with you.

Where people get stuck is the in-between: which answer to trust, and how to get the business earning once the permit arrives. That’s where we come in.

A lawyer can cost less up front, and for some families it’s the right call. We used one. For everyone else, Launch and Complete include the business side nobody else covers.

How we built this table: we compared the services and prices each type of provider publishes on its own website and on comparison sites, checked in September 2026, with our own DAFT move. Prices are typical ranges, not quotes from any one firm. Billed in EUR; USD approx.

Straight answer

Most people don’t need a lawyer

We used one ourselves. Our adult daughter moved with us while studying online at a US college, and a medical situation meant we couldn’t risk any gap in health coverage. That’s exactly the kind of case where a lawyer earns the fee.

We’re not lawyers, tax advisors or accountants, and we’ll tell you plainly when you need one.

You might want one too if

  • Your family situation isn’t standard, such as adult children moving with you
  • You’re setting up a BV or a more complex company structure
  • You’d simply sleep better with legal representation

You’ll also need an accountant or financial advisor to check your opening balance, because the IND asks for it. We don’t do the accounting ourselves. We help you find the right accountant and make sure you know what they’ll need from you.

What we learned

We built ECS under the treaty

Our DAFT story

We’re Americans who built ECS under DAFT, and we learned some of it the hard way. John first registered as a ZZP and Kristen opened her own business, because we didn’t know another route. A year in, we found we could form a VOF and work together under the treaty.

The IND didn’t ask for our business plan when we applied, but it can at any time, and we hear of more people being asked at renewal. Our IND appointments took ten minutes. The tax side took longer: VAT filing changes with your business type, a new eHerkenning login isn’t instant, and a payment counts only when it reaches the Belastingdienst’s bank. Our advice? Research your market before you move, even if you start with Google.

DAFT Visa Support FAQs

Your permit

What are the DAFT visa requirements?

DAFT, the Dutch American Friendship Treaty, lets US citizens live in the Netherlands while running their own business. You need US citizenship and a genuine self-employed business in the Netherlands, with an initial investment of at least €4.500 for most business forms, and you must maintain at least €4.500 of equity in the business at all times. On a first application, if you don’t yet have a Dutch residence permit, you apply first, then register with the KvK and make the investment within 6 months of the IND’s decision letter. The IND asks for your KvK registration, a business bank statement, and an opening balance checked by an accountant or financial advisor that shows the investment as equity in your business. There’s no minimum income test for the permit itself. Source: IND.

How much does DAFT cost in total?

The IND application fee is €423. You also make an initial investment of at least €4.500 in your business and must maintain at least €4.500 of equity in it at all times, so that money stays yours. Add the KvK registration, an accountant’s check, and any help you choose: our packages run from €995 to €2.895, or start with a free consultation. Source: IND (2026 fee); our prices.

Do I need DAFT visa help, or can I do it myself?

Plenty of people do it themselves. With us, you still do it yourself, with someone to ask instead of a forum. DAFT visa help is worth it when the conflicting advice is costing you sleep, when you want a second pair of eyes on your plan, or when you want help with everything that comes after the permit. If you’re doing it yourself, a free consultation is a good way to check you’re on the right track.

Will you file my DAFT application for me?

No. You submit your own application, and we make sure you’re never guessing: the right form, the documents it asks for, where to go and how to book each appointment, and an answer to every question in between. We’re not lawyers, and if your case needs one, we’ll tell you.

What happens at renewal?

Your first permit lasts up to two years. To renew, the IND asks for an interim balance sheet and profit and loss for the current and previous year, checked by an accountant, showing you’ve maintained at least €4.500 of equity in the business. A bank statement alone isn’t enough. The IND also looks more closely at whether your business has been active, and it can ask for your business plan, so keep yours current. Source: IND extension form.

Can my family come with me?

Partners and minor children can usually apply to join you. Adult children are a different case with stricter rules, which is why we used a lawyer for our own move. Check the IND’s family pages for your situation. Source: IND; our experience.

Can you guarantee my DAFT approval?

No, and be careful of anyone who does. The decision is the IND’s. What we can promise is an application you understand, and real help getting ready for renewal.

Your business

What business can I start under DAFT?

Most self-employed work qualifies. Common DAFT business ideas range from freelancing in your profession to trade between the Netherlands and the US. You can set up as a sole proprietor (eenmanszaak, frequently referred to as ZZP), a general partnership (VOF), or a private limited liability company (BV). We started as a ZZP and later formed a VOF. The permit covers working for yourself; working as an employee for a Dutch company needs a separate work permit. The better question is which idea will actually earn a living here. That’s what our Business Idea & Market Check answers. Source: IND.

Do I need a business plan for a DAFT visa?

Usually not for the application itself. A business plan isn’t on the IND’s list for a first DAFT application, and the IND didn’t ask for ours. But the IND can request one at any time, and renewal is when it checks more closely that your business has actually been active, so have a plan ready. More than that, a business plan backed by strategy is important to your business’s success: it sets who you’ll sell to, what you’ll charge, and how you’ll reach them. A plan written only for the IND won’t do that. That’s where we’re different: every plan we write starts with a Market Check of your demand, competitors and price, so it’s a plan you’ll actually run. Source: IND; our experience.

What help do you give with the business side?

This is where most of our work goes. Every package starts with a Market Check on demand, competitors and price, then your DAFT business plan, built on what you find. Launch adds a one-page website and business email so clients can find you from your first week. Complete adds a 90-day plan for your first Dutch clients, your Google Business Profile, and a check at month 18 that the business is on track for renewal. We built our own business here under DAFT, so the advice comes from doing it.

How do I find my first clients in the Netherlands?

Start before you move. Talk to five potential customers, test your price with them, and pick one or two channels instead of trying them all. Many DAFT entrepreneurs keep US clients while they build Dutch ones, which takes pressure off the first months. Our First Clients Plan (€495) gives you a 90-day plan: who to approach first, which channels to use, and your Google Business Profile set up. It’s included in Complete.

Do I need a website for my DAFT business?

It isn’t one of the documents the IND asks for, but clients will look you up before they reply. A one-page site with your own domain and business email is enough to start. Our DAFT Starter Website (€995, a DAFT special price) is live in one to two weeks, and it’s included in Launch and Complete.

Do you do my accounting or bookkeeping?

No. We’re not accountants, and we don’t do bookkeeping, tax returns or your opening balance check. We help you find the right people: what to look for in an accountant who works with Americans, what to ask them, and what they’ll need from you for the opening balance and again at renewal.
