Research by John McAvoy, PhD, and Kristen McAvoy, MBAStudies tailored to your decision

Who you’ll work with
The founders do the research.
You work with John and Kristen directly, from the first call to the final recommendation.
John McAvoy, PhD
Research design and analysis
John builds the study and tests the evidence; his doctoral training is in saying plainly what the data can and can’t support. Four scholarly publications later, he writes it up so you can act on it.
Kristen McAvoy, MBA
What it means for your marketing
Kristen reads the findings as a marketer: who the buyer is, how competitors position themselves, and what that means for your message. She brings more than a decade in strategic communication and brand positioning, and an MBA in marketing.
The problem
The cost of making decisions blind
You commit before you’ve checked
Demand, pricing and competition get assumed instead of tested, and the first sign of a mistake is a quarter of weak sales.
Competitors move first
Without a clear view of who else is selling, what they charge and what they claim, you find the gap after someone else has filled it.
Plans that don’t stand up
A lender, a partner or a board reads a plan for its evidence. When the numbers rest on guesses, the plan stalls, and the growth waits with it.
Market entry research weighs the evidence, then gives you a clear call: go, pause or stop.
Why ECS
Research is the method. The decision is the deliverable.
We’ve made the transatlantic move, both ways
- We’re Americans running a business in The Hague
- We rebuilt the marketing strategy for a client entering the US market
Built around your decision
- We agree on the decision you’re making before we gather anything
- Every hour goes to answering that question
- You get a recommendation you can defend, with the reasoning shown
We say what we couldn’t confirm
- Every figure carries a publisher and a date
- We pressure-test the assumptions rather than confirm them
- What we can’t verify, we label as unconfirmed

The first page of a market entry study
It comes from a Market Entry: Focused study. We wrote it for this page rather than taking it from a client, because your research stays private. The client is made up. The market figures are real, and each one is in the source register.

The decision
Should a small US company sell its workshop-booking software to bike shops in the Netherlands, and if so, how should it start?
Recommendation
Go, if a pilot holds. Run a 90-day pilot with 10 shops. Go ahead if at least 6 are still taking bookings through the software at day 90. If 4 or fewer are, stop or rethink the price before spending more.
Why the shop is the right customer
795,968 new bikes were sold in the Netherlands in 2025, and specialist bike shops took 82% of the industry’s turnover [S2]. Dutch cyclists still buy and service through the local shop.
Market size, with the arithmetic shown
Source register
| Ref | Figure | Source | Date | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S1 | 2,695 bike and moped shops; 1,530 with 2+ people working | CBS, ‘Bedrijven; bedrijfstak’ (table 81589NED), 3rd quarter 2026 | July 15, 2026 | Official statistics, provisional |
| S2 | 795,968 new bikes sold in 2025; specialist shops 82% of turnover | RAI Vereniging and BOVAG, research by NielsenIQ | February 9, 2026 | Industry association |
| S3 | ‘More than 2,350’ bike businesses use CycleSoftware, the leading shop till system | CycleSoftware website | read September 28, 2026 | Vendor’s own claim, not verified |
What we couldn’t confirm
- How many of the 2,695 shops mainly sell mopeds. CBS counts bikes and mopeds together.
- How many of CycleSoftware’s 2,350 users are Dutch, so we can’t say how many shops a CycleSoftware connection would reach. We’d ask them before launch.
- Whether Dutch shops will pay US-level prices. No published source answers that; the pilot does.

Our deepest engagement
Market entry research, at the depth you need
The one we know best. Three levels, each answering a bigger question: whether a market deserves a closer look, whether to go, and exactly how.
Every study can be tailored to your decision, with the price agreed in writing before any work starts. No VAT added, subject to change.
Market Entry: Scan
A fast, desk-based read on one market for one offer, so you know whether it deserves a closer look before you spend more.
Answers: is this market worth a closer look?
What’s included
- A market size and growth range, so you know if the opportunity is big enough to pursue
- A demand check from search trends, so you know whether interest is rising or fading
- A list of the main competitors, so you know who you’d be up against
- A warning-signs check, so a crowded market or a squeezed price point doesn’t surprise you later
- A go further, pause or stop call, with the reasons, so you know your next step
What you receiveA short written brief (about 5 pages) with every source listed, and a 30-minute call to talk it through.
Best for: testing an idea before you commit a real budget.
The fee counts toward a Starter or Focused study if you book within 60 days.
Market Entry: Starter
Most businesses start here: it answers the go or no-go question before you spend on entry.
An evidence-based go or no-go on one market, with the customers to reach first and how to start.
Answers: should we go?
Everything in Scan, plus
- A serviceable-market estimate, with the method shown, so you know how much you can realistically reach
- A profile of up to 3 competitors (offers, prices, promises), so you know where you’d fit
- A first-customer profile, so you know who to sell to first and why they’ll buy
- A go or no-go recommendation with the evidence, so you can decide with confidence
- A 90-day channel plan, so you can start moving the week you decide
What you receiveA written report (about 12 pages) with a one-page summary and a source register, and a 60-minute walkthrough.
Best for: a quick, evidence-based decision before you commit budget to a new market.
Market Entry: Focused
One market, one offer, the core question answered in depth: is this worth entering, and if so, exactly how.
Answers: exactly how do we go, and what would change our mind?
Everything in Starter, plus
- A market-share estimate, with the arithmetic shown, so you know what you can realistically win
- A map of who holds the market, so you know how much they control and what makes it hard to break in
- Local price benchmarks, so you can price with confidence
- The conditions that would change the decision, so you know what to watch
- A phased entry plan with milestones, so you know when to push on or pull back
What you receiveA full report with a one-page summary, a source register (every figure with its publisher and date), a 60-minute walkthrough, and 30 days of follow-up questions by email.
Best for: a single, well-defined market you’re weighing seriously.
Need more? Several markets at once, or a full go-to-market plan, are scoped as a custom study, priced before any work starts.
Focused Studies
Research for a single decision
Not every decision needs a full market-entry engagement. Each of these is a standalone study, built to answer one question, available on its own or as part of a larger engagement.
Market Analysis
Know how big the opportunity really is and which customers to go after first, so you can plan, budget or pitch with numbers you can defend.
Answers: how big is this opportunity, and who buys first?
What you get
- Know the size of the prize: the total market, the part you can serve, and the share you can realistically win, with the math shown
- See where the market is heading, and what’s driving it
- Know which customer groups are worth your time, sized side by side
- Start with the right customers: a first-pick segment, with the reasons
- Spot the signals that would change the forecast before they surprise you
- Plan with confidence: every assumption listed, and what would change it
What you receiveA two-page executive summary, a full report with an evidence appendix (every figure with its publisher and date), a 60-minute walkthrough and 30 days of follow-up questions by email.
Deeper than the marketing-lens scan on our Marketing page (from €850): numbers you can defend in a budget or a pitch.
Competitor Analysis
Know exactly who you’re up against and where you can win, so you can price, position and sell with confidence.
Answers: who are we up against, and where’s our gap?
What you get
- See up to 4 competitors, direct and indirect, side by side
- Price with confidence: what each sells, at what price, and how it’s bundled
- Know which promises are crowded, and which claims competitors can’t back up
- Learn where they win customers: their channels and content
- Hear what their customers love and complain about, from reviews
- See the open space on a positioning map
- Leave with a plan to stand apart: the moves to make first
What you receiveA full report with a one-page summary, the comparison matrix and positioning map, a source register, a 60-minute walkthrough and 30 days of follow-up questions by email.
More than the marketing-lens scan on our Marketing page (up to 3 competitors, from €850): indirect competitors, a full pricing teardown and a positioning map.

Market Research FAQs
The research
What is the difference between market entry research, market analysis and competitor analysis?
Market entry research answers one question: should you enter a market, and if so, how. A market analysis sizes an opportunity and picks the customers to go after first. A competitor analysis maps who you’re up against and finds your gap. Many businesses start with a Scan and add one of the others.
Which market entry study should I start with?
Most businesses start with Starter, because it answers the go or no-go question before you spend on entry. If you’re still testing an idea, a Scan tells you in two weeks whether the market deserves a closer look, and its fee counts toward Starter or Focused within 60 days. Choose Focused once you’ve decided to go and need the how.
How is the analysis here different from the Competitor & Market Analysis on your marketing services?
The Competitor & Market Analysis add-on on Marketing Strategy (from €850, up to 3 competitors) is a lighter, marketing-lens scan to inform positioning and content. The studies here go deeper: full sizing, up to 4 competitors direct and indirect, a positioning map, a pricing teardown and an evidence report you can put in front of a board.
Do I really need this, or can I just get it from AI?
AI is fast at surface facts and confident about things it can’t verify. We source every figure, pressure-test the assumptions, and tell you plainly what we couldn’t confirm, which is exactly the part a real decision rests on.
What if the research says my idea won’t work?
Then you’ve saved the cost of finding out the expensive way. A clear no-go, with the conditions that would change it, is a valuable outcome in its own right.
How do I do market research for a business idea?
Start with the decision, not the data. Write down what you’d need to believe to go ahead: enough buyers, a price they’ll pay, a way to reach them. Then check each one: search demand and public statistics for size, competitors’ prices and reviews for what buyers already pay and complain about, and a handful of conversations with people who’d actually buy. If the evidence is thin or points both ways, a Scan does that desk work for you in two weeks and says plainly what we couldn’t confirm.
What do you need from me to get started?
Less than you might think. The most important thing you bring is the decision itself, and we pin that down together on the first call. After that, send us whatever you already have, such as sales figures, customer lists, past research or a pitch deck, so we build on it instead of repeating it. Otherwise, expect a short check-in partway through and a review call when the findings are ready.
Cost and timing
How much does market research cost for a small business?
Market entry research starts at €1.250 for a Scan, €2.900 for Starter and €4.500 for Focused; a Market Analysis or Competitor Analysis starts at €1.500. Every card shows a starting price, and we can tailor any study to your decision. We confirm the price in writing on your free consultation, before any work begins.
How long does market entry research take?
A Market Analysis or Competitor Analysis takes two to four weeks; market entry research takes two to six, depending on depth: Scan two, Starter three to five, and Focused four to six. We confirm the timeline on your free consultation before any work begins.
How does payment work?
Half to begin, half on delivery; projects of €2.000 or more can instead be paid in installments if chosen: half to begin, then 3 equal payments, the first 14 days after completion and the next two 30 days apart. No VAT added, subject to change. We send the service agreement first, and the first invoice within one business day of getting it back signed.
Do the prices include VAT?
No VAT is added. We’re exempt from charging VAT under the Dutch small business scheme (KOR), so the price you see is the price you pay. If that changes as the business grows, we’ll tell you before it affects any quote.
How many rounds of revisions do I get?
We don’t cap revisions at a set number, because the point is a deliverable that actually fits you. We keep refining within the agreed scope until it is right. A brand-new direction after sign-off is new work, and we’ll flag it rather than fold it into the same fee.
What if my decision doesn’t fit one of these studies?
Then we build a custom quote around what you actually need, for example several markets at once, or a full go-to-market plan. Plenty of work spans two of these or sits between them. Tell us the decision you’re trying to make and we’ll scope it.
